Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog: Warmer air on the way

The wintry cold weekend gives way to near above-average air heading into mid-week.

INDIANAPOLIS — It was quite a cold weekend in central Indiana. If you're not a fan of winter, then you should enjoy what's ahead the next seven days.

First, our coldest morning since Feb. 4 deserves a recap. Lows bottomed-out in the mid- to lower teens Sunday, thanks to a fresh coating of snow from overnight snow bursts.

Those snow streaks were evident on visible satellite this morning.

Thankfully, snowpack in March doesn't stick around long, and it was quickly melted by the blanket of sunshine today, which pushed temperatures into the mid/upper 30s.

Thanks to the blue sky, temperatures Sunday afternoon were more than 10 degrees warmer than Saturday, with an even bigger warmup occurring in the Plains. That's what's ahead in our forecast, with temperatures trending above average heading into mid-week.

Temperatures Monday morning will require heavier coats once again as they dip into the lower 20s. But plenty of sun leads to a quick warmup, and highs climb into the 50s Monday afternoon for the opening of astronomical spring that technically begins at 5:24 p.m. EDT with the spring equinox.

That's when the sun's direct rays cross over the equator on the gradual path toward the Tropic Of Cancer (23.5° N latitude) that occurs on the summer solstice, June 21, at 10:57 a.m. EDT.

Tuesday looks mainly sunny, and highs flirt with 60 degrees before some showers arrive in the evening. That begins an unsettled stretch with intervals of showers Tuesday night into Thursday, which will be the warmest day this week with highs in the upper 60s.

Showers become a steady rain on Thursday night into Friday, and some of that rain could be heavy at times with the potential of thunder, too.

The early call for next weekend is dry and near-normal temperatures in the 50s.
