Aung Aung was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty of attempted murder of an IMPD officer and carrying a handgun without a license.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to to quarter century in prison after being convicted in a 2021 attempted murder case.

Aung Aung was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty of attempted murder of an IMPD officer and carrying a handgun without a license.

Around 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2021, officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Greentree Apartments in the 7000 block of Hackberry Court, near East Stop 11 Road and Madison Avenue.

Police said multiple people called 911 after the male suspect, later identified as Aung, fired shots inside the apartment complex. He continued shooting after police arrived.

Officers reportedly told Aung to drop his gun "numerous" times, to which he did not respond. When the man reportedly fired at officers, three officers fired their weapons, striking Aung.

Aung was taken to an Indianapolis hospital in serious condition. His condition was later downgraded to critical, but he recovered. No officers were injured.

“The defendant’s actions not only endangered the lives of the responding officers but the lives of nearby neighbors,” said Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “We will not tolerate violence against law enforcement officers or community members and this significant sentence is a testament to that commitment.”
