Indianapolis man convicted of attempted murder on city's south side

The incident happened Aug. 27, 2021, at an apartment complex near East Stop 11 Road and Madison Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — A judge found an Indianapolis man guilty of attempted murder on the city's south side in August 2021.

Aung Aung was also found guilty of carrying a handgun without a license, but the judge ruled Aung was not guilty of criminal recklessness.

Around 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2021, officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Greentree Apartments in the 7000 block of Hackberry Court, near East Stop 11 Road and Madison Avenue.

Police said multiple people called 911 after Aung fired shots inside an apartment complex. Body cam video released by police show Aung holding a handgun and firing shots from the patio.

The first officer to the scene can be heard in the body cam video saying "he's shooting at me" after shots are fired.

When more officers arrive to the scene, the officers are heard on body cam video telling Aung to drop his gun multiple times, to which he did not respond. Body cam video then shows Aung walking toward police with both arms out, holding the gun.

IMPD said three officers fired their weapons at Aung, hitting him. No officers were injured in the incident.

Aung was taken to an Indianapolis hospital for his injuries before he was transported to the Marion County jail.

“I commend law enforcement for their quick response during an incredibly stressful exchange,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. “We are pleased to have secured justice for the officers involved and the defendant will no longer have the opportunity to endanger innocent lives in our community.”

Aung's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
