2023 central Indiana election results | Whitfield marks historic win, Hogsett takes third term

Indiana voters returned to the polls to elect mayors, council members and decide on school referendums.

INDIANAPOLIS — This year, Indiana voters returned to the polls to elect mayors, council members and decide on school referendums.

9:49 p.m. – Democrat James Coffman has defeated Rick Skirvin in the race for Beech Grove mayor.

9:46 p.m. – Mayor Joe Hogsett delivers his victory speech after defeating Jefferson Shreve.

9:38 p.m. – Democrat Deb Whitfield has flipped Lawrence to become its first Black mayor.

9:04 p.m. – The FOP issued the following statement on the Indianapolis mayoral race:

We commend both candidates for their passionate campaigns to set a vision for Indianapolis.

We congratulate Mayor Joe Hogsett on his re-election. The Mayor knows well the immediate need to boldly make moves to retain officers and set the stage for a net gain of staffing for IMPD.

We are confident that we can collectively work in good faith in the coming months to set a standard that incentivizes the needed growth in the ranks to move our capital city toward safety and prosperity.

Time is of the essence. Let’s go to work.

8:56 p.m. – Jefferson Shreve has conceded to Joe Hogsett in the Indianapolis mayor race.

   

8:45 p.m. – Republican Sue Finkam delivers her victory speech in the race for Carmel mayor.

8:33 p.m. – Mary Ferdon has defeated Sean Burton for Muncie mayor.

8:24 p.m. – With 65% of the votes counted, Joe Hogsett still leads Jefferson Shreve 59% to 41%.

8:17 p.m. – Democrat Miles Nelson concedes to Sue Finkam in Carmel's race for mayor. She won with 56% to Nelson's 44% of the vote.

8:04 p.m. – Joe Hogsett is leading Jefferson Shreve 59% to 41% as the vote count reaches 47%.

7:51 p.m. – With 46% of the vote count in for Marion County, Joe Hogsett leads Jefferson Shreve 60% to 40%.

   

7:39 p.m. – First numbers in from Marion County show Joe Hogsett leading Jefferson Shreve 61% to 39%.

7:31 p.m. – Here's an even closer race. Shelbyville mayoral candidates are separated by just 19 votes at this point.

7:25 p.m. – The race for Carmel mayor is a close one.

7:20 p.m. – 164,677 people voted in the 2023 Municipal Election in Marion County compared to 153,977 in 2019. The voter turnout for 2023 was 26.3%.

7:16 p.m. – Jefferson Shreve has arrived at his election night headquarters.

7:10 p.m. – Republican Don Sturch has won Peru mayor with 72 percent of the vote over Democrat Stephanie Graf.

7 p.m. – Ballots are arriving for counting from the polling locations around Marion County.

6:45 p.m. – Hogsett supporters are starting to show up at his election night headquarters.

6:40 p.m. – We're getting some early numbers on some of the school referendums.

6:35 p.m. – You've gotta love democracy in action.

6:23 p.m. – It will be a big night in the race for Indianapolis mayor.

6:16 p.m. – The first vote counts are coming in. You can check the races in your area here.

6:08 p.m. – As of 5:30, around 114,000 people had voted in Marion County. There were nearly 50,000 absentee ballots cast.

6:03 p.m. – One of the biggest races is for Indianapolis mayor as incumbent Joe Hogsett faces Republican Jefferson Shreve.

6 p.m. – The polls are closed, but voters already in line will be allowed to vote.
