Two former Hoosiers among 11 killed in Gatlinburg fires

Jon and Janet Summers, formerly of New Albany, have been identified as two of the eleven killed as a result of fires around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WTHR) - Two former New Albany, Indiana residents are among the eleven victims of fires in Sevier County, Tennessee.

Jon and Janet Summers were vacationing in Gatlinburg with their three adult sons.

The family got separated while trying to escape.

The three brothers were rescued and are recovering at hospitals in the area.

Seventy others have been injured in fires across the Great Smoky Mountain region of eastern Tennessee.

Rescue crews are still searching for dozens of others who are unaccounted for.

Friday morning, some will be allowed limited access to their properties in some of the burned areas.

More than 700 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. More than 14,000 have been evacuated from the region.
