IMPD investigates deadly overnight shooting near downtown canal

Police responded to a reported shooting overnight near the Downtown Canal.

INDIANAPOLIS — Metro police homicide detectives are investigating an overnight shooting that left a woman dead between the Downtown Canal and Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

Officers were called to 729 Canal Court just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday and found a female shot. 

She died at the hospital, according to a media release from IMPD Sunday morning.

She was later identified as 24-year-old Jessica Doty-Whitaker. 

Police have not said what may have led to the shooting.
