'Out in detour land' | Brownsburg businesses say construction is costing them

Construction of a roundabout has closed the highway just south of downtown Brownsburg.

BROWNSBURG, Indiana — Along what's normally a busy and very loud highway in Brownsburg, the silence speaks volumes to Tia Gross.

"This is very unusual," Gross said.

And very frustrating.

Fewer cars and trucks along South Green Street, also known as State Road 267, means fewer customers at Gross' furniture and home décor shop.

"I'm down 55, 60%, which is huge for a small business," she said.

Construction of a roundabout has closed the highway just south of downtown, forcing people to drive around the closure via a detour.

But Gross and her neighbors say the detour lacks signage.

"The detour signs are not marked well," she said. "I get phone calls every day: 'Can we get to you? How do we get to you?' And they're lost out in detour land trying to navigate it. With the price of gas, no one wants to drive another 15, 20 minutes to get to what used to take them five."

"You're hitting major intersections without a simple sign saying, 'keep going straight,'" said Bryce Curry, who owns Premier Arms.

The garden center next door is holding a construction sale to attract more customers. The owner told 13News they had to cut their hours because of a lack of business traffic.

"The easiest would be simply putting signs up so people can, from line of sight or whatever, follow the arrows and connect the dots and work their way around without getting lost," Curry said.

In the meantime, they are taking it one day at a time and reminding all who will listen that they are still open.

"Maybe we're out of the way, but come see us," Curry said.

13News called and emailed Brownsburg Town Hall, but so far we haven't heard back. This story will be updated when we receive a response.
