MAYFIELD, Ky. — A severe storm system that moved through several states along the Mississippi River caused significant damage to a western Kentucky city.

WPSD-TV reports multiple buildings have been damaged in the city, including the Graves County Courthouse. Photos shared by the Vanderburgh County (Indiana) Emergency Management Agency showed the courthouse before and after the tornado struck.

Also in Mayfield, crews were reportedly working to locate people who may have been trapped in the rubble of a candle factory that collapsed in the storm. One woman told WPSD it wasn't known how many people may be trapped, but rescuers have heard people who are beneath the rubble at the Mayfield Consumer Products factory.

Mayfield is about 30 miles due south of Paducah, Kentucky and 125 miles southwest of Evansville, Indiana.

The Kentucky State Police is responding to several counties where tornadoes touched down in the western part of the state.

"While no fatalities have been confirmed at this time, loss of life is expected," the department posted on Facebook shortly after midnight Saturday.
