INDIANAPOLIS — As one of the biggest winter storms hits central Indiana since January 2014, many school districts have one message: keep your kids home.

But keeping them entertained isn't always easy, especially if parents are working.

Here are ways to keep the kids occupied while the snow cancels in-person school.

Sports

The Winter Olympics start Friday, so it's a good time to teach them about the different types of sports and the athletes who are competing in them. The videos that break it all down are on the Olympics website.

13News also interviewed athletes from Indiana about their journey. Those videos can be found here.

Later on, ask your kids who they want to root for and what events they're most interested in.

Art and science

If they want to be more hands on, try free drawing lessons.

The YouTube Channel Art for Kids Hub offers videos with step-by-step directions that are easy to follow. With these lessons, kids can make Valentine's Day cards for family and friends.

The Children's Museum also has a series of Children's Museum at Home videos, which offer science experiment tutorials.

Careers

The Nat Geo Kids online series You Wanna Be What? showcases people with interesting careers. Episodes include space suit designers and snake charmers.

If you pay for Discovery +, consider the show Dirty Jobs.

History

If it's a history lesson the kids prefer, try out "The Who Was Show" on Netflix. While it's only one season, it teaches kids about historical figures.

General

The Indianapolis Public Library has a section on their site dedicated to free music and book downloads. They offer videos and books via platforms including Kanopy, Tumble Book Library, and Hoopla.
