$14 million in street improvements coming to downtown Indianapolis

The money will go toward street resurfacing and curb and sidewalk repairs.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Transportation will be pumping $14 million into downtown improvements in Indianapolis.

The money will go toward street resurfacing and curb and sidewalk repairs.

The areas being focused on are those that had increased traffic during the North Split construction project.

The work will begin this summer and extend through the 2024 construction season.

Here is a list of the sections that will be worked on:

2023

  • St. Clair Street from just west of the railroad tracks to Davidson Street
  • Michigan Street from the east side of Pine Street to the west side of Davidson Street
  • New York Street from the east side of Pine Street to the west side of Davidson Street
  • Davidson Street from Saint Clair Street  to Massachusetts Avenue
  • 10th Street from Central Avenue to Jefferson Street
  • 11th Street from Central Avenue to College Avenue
  • Central Avenue from Fort Wayne Avenue to 16th Street
  • Central Avenue at I-65 – curb sidewalks

2024

  • College Avenue from the south edge of 12th Street to the Monon loop turn off
  • West Street from 11th Street to Morris Street
  • Washington Street from East Street to Southeastern Avenue
  • Dorman Street from Saint Clair Street to 10th Street
  • Alabama Street from Saint Clair Street to 16th Street
  • 11th Street from Meridian Street to Delaware Street
  • Rural Street at Washington Street –curb and signal

The North Split recently reopened after a nearly 2-year closure. The $350 million project replaced more than 40 bridges, replaced deteriorating pavement and eliminated dangerous weaving patterns.

The state claims the North Split project will also improve things for bicycles and pedestrians with wider sidewalks and new lighting. Thousands of trees will also be planted.
