'We gave everybody something to cheer for' | Wapahani makes first state final appearance weeks after tornado tears through Selma

"This team came together and led us all the way there," said Landon Weller, a senior.

INDIANAPOLIS — On Indiana high school basketball's biggest stage, the Wapahani Raiders made their first IHSAA boys basketball State Finals appearance on Saturday.

"This team came together and led us all the way there," said Landon Weller, a senior.

This game wasn't only for the win. Just weeks ago, a tornado ripped through Selma, damaging the small town, but during clean up, the Raiders went on to win their first semi-state title.

"We gave everybody something to cheer and pull for," said Matt Luce, head coach.

So the town followed them to Indy, with hopes of earning their first state title.

"What a great crowd by Wapahani and Brownstown and for us to show off in Indy, is something we will never forget and something we are really proud of," Luce said.

Although the team lost, fans say this community still won.

"It proves that no matter what we are a small town, we can do anything and we have an amazing community," said Klhoe Sipes, a sophomore.

A community brought together through perseverance and basketball, that's what Indiana is all about.
