RICHMOND, Ind. — Widespread power outages were reported across portions of eastern Indiana Tuesday morning.

At 8:30 a.m., Richmond Power and Light reported more than 10,000 customers without power.

In a social media post, the utility company said a "regional outage" was also impacting Centerville, Liberty and Hagerstown along with other nearby communities.

"We are experiencing a widespread outage. We have crews accessing," the utility company said.

Around 9 a.m., Richmond Power and Light posted an update on restoration efforts.

"It appears half of our system is with power and we are in the process of restoring circuits to other areas.  Thank you for your patience," the utility company said.

By 9:30 a.m., Richmond Power and Light reported roughly 4,500 outages. About an hour later, power was restored.

Around 2:30 p.m., there were only 14 Richmond Power and Light customers still without power.

Duke Energy reported roughly 3,000 outages in an area stretching from Liberty to Centerville.

As of 2:30 p.m., all of the Duke outages in the area were resolved.

"With the uncertainty of power to our schools, we are forced to dismiss all RCS schools early today," Richmond Community Schools posted on social media. "All 7th-12th grade bus riders will be taken home via school bus. All PreK-6th grade students will need to be picked up by a parent/guardian."

Indiana University East announced that classes had been canceled until noon due to the outage, but would resume at that time.
