'It means so much' | Salvation Army helps over 4,000 kids in annual Coats for Kids Drive

More than $35,000 was raised online for Coats for Kids just within the last few weeks.

INDIANAPOLIS — Thousands of families in central Indiana are feeling a little bit warmer, thanks to your generosity.

The Salvation Army of Central Indiana handed out over 4,000 coats to families in need.

"So happy about it, because it helps a lot," Omo Wumi said.

13News took a stroll with Omo Wumi, as she and her husband picked out coats for their three kids.

"David, Debra, Daniel. 6, 4 and 2," Wumi said.

The family of five made about a 45-minute trip from Brownsburg Saturday morning, with a goal of keeping their kids warm this winter without feeling a pinch in their wallets.

"Buying coats is very expensive. especially with this, not just one but two kids," Wumi said.

This year, the Salvation Army said they helped dress at least 4,000 kids with coats through the event.

A big part of that is thanks to your "Hoosier Hospitality". More than $35,000 was raised online, within the last few weeks.

"We do this every year. We buy the hats and gloves and give them all away," David and William Murphy said.

Brothers David and William Murphy have been volunteering here for the last 15 years. A tradition started by their parents.

"With being able to go to school, we had clothes, we had hats, we had gloves, we didn't worry about that but there's lots of people that don't have that. This helps," Murphy said. "One person at a time, one person at a time."

And that help is greatly appreciated.

"It means so much and whoever is donating, may God keep blessing. More and more blessing into their pocket," Wumi said.
