Moped driver killed in 2-vehicle crash in Marion

The crash happened around 7 a.m. Thursday along North Baldwin Avenue near West Winona Avenue.

MARION, Indiana — A moped driver died following a crash with another vehicle in Marion early Thursday, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. March 21 in the 800 block of North Baldwin Avenue, near West Winona Avenue and in front of McClure's Convenience Store.

The Marion Police Department said an initial investigation and witness accounts indicated a 2001 Dodge SUV was traveling south on Baldwin Avenue when a 2019 moped traveling north turned into its path while attempting to pull into the convenience store parking lot.

"The (SUV) could not avoid the collision with the moped and as a result, the moped driver was ejected from his moped," police said in a statement.

The moped driver, identified as 23-year-old Joshua S. Plumb, of Marion, was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital with serious injuries, and in an update later Thursday, Marion police said he died there.

The northbound lanes of North Baldwin Avenue were closed for around three hours during the investigation. Police said alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.
