Indy man in viral video with cop at pool released from jail after disturbance with police

A man whose run-in with an off-duty officer at a swimming pool that went viral is now facing charges for allegedly fighting with police.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — North Indianapolis resident Shayne Holland is out of jail after his downtown Indy arrest outside Tiki Bob's Cantina.

His arrest charges include two felony counts of battery on a public safety official, two misdemeanor counts of resisting law-enforcement, one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass, and two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief.

In an unrelated case Holland made headlines after he used his cell phone to record an off duty officer snatching his key who questioned his residency at River Crossing at Keystone Apartments.

The complex hired off duty police to patrol the property and help identify people at the swimming pool as legitimate residents and/or guests invited by tenants. Holland told Eyewitness News he believed he was singled out at the pool and questioned about his residency by a white off-duty officer from IMPD because he is African-American. But the complex, which has a non-discriminatory policy, had already been trying to get a handle on people trespassing at the pool.

The President and CEO of the company that oversees River Crossing apologized to Holland for the incident and launched its own investigation which included putting the onsite manager on administrative leave pending the outcome.

Sources told Eyewitness News Holland's name came up in a disturbance prior involving a pool party involving about 40 non-resident guests which had not been approved by the complex management staff.

In the weekend disturbance leading to Holland's arrest, downtown sources told Eyewitness News security personnel inside the bar asked Holland to leave after an alleged disturbance, but he refused. That's when a bouncer reportedly removed him from the bar while holding him in a headlock.

Once outside, an IMPD officer working the downtown bar scene responded to the disturbance. The officer, also African-American, reportedly had conversation with Holland. During those talks Holland reportedly stated he had a meeting with IMPD Chief Bryan Roache.

The officer reportedly encouraged Holland to go home, and that's when he suddenly had an outburst, refused to go home, and began an altercation with the officer.

During that altercation Holland reportedly kicked a police car parked outside and injured the officer's ankle before several officers were able to subdue him. The injured officer has been on the police department for almost five years.

Paramedics transported Shayne Holland to the hospital for a laceration above his eye . Doctors treated him, then he was then transported and booked into the Marion County jail. He was released just before 4 a.m. Monday.

The officer who arrested Holland reportedly learned several hours later about his involvement at River Crossing with the off-duty officer.

Holland's initial hearing is set for for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Holland's mother, who shares an apartment with him at River Crossing, has come to his defense. They moved to the north Indy complex a little more than a year ago according to Shayne.
