INDIANAPOLIS — Arbor Day is right around the corner, and one local organization is helping Hoosiers celebrate.

AES Indiana announced its participation in the annual Arbor Day celebration as a part of the Arbor Day Foundation's requirements to have a "Tree City USA" status for the 36th year.

For the tree celebration, AES Indiana will give out free tree saplings to the public at the Garfield Park Burrello Family Center, located at 2345 Pagoda Drive, Friday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the giveaway at the park, the organization will host a workshop for attendees to learn about the environmental issues our world faces.

Since 2008, AES Indiana has given away more than 11,000 trees during Arbor Day celebrations.

For those partaking in the celebration, here's some safety tips for planting near electrical equipment:

  • Plant trees at a distance of at least 50 feet from power lines to reduce contact between the two as the tree grows.
  • Choose the right type of tree that won't affect power lines around it, such as trees with smaller mature sizes.
  • Call AES Indiana at 317-261-8111 if you notice a tree too close to power lines.
