'You have to answer to God' | Family of 12-year-old boy killed after being hit by vehicle on Indy's near west side ask driver to come forward

Officers responded to a report of a person down in the 500 block of North Elder Avenue, near West Michigan Street and North Belmont Avenue, around 9 a.m. Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a deadly hit-and-run crash killed a 12-year-old pedestrian Friday morning on the city's near west side.

"He left my sister's house on Friday the 26th at 6 o'clock in the morning, and he was found dead supposedly two hours after, supposedly in this alley," Zakiya Cole Morris said.

Morris is now on a relentless pursuit for justice after IMPD says her nephew, Monterious Crowe, was hit by a vehicle and died.

Officers responded to a report of a person down in an alley in the 500 block of North Elder Avenue, near West Michigan Street and North Belmont Avenue, around 9:20 a.m. April 26.

Police arrived and found a male with "injuries consistent with trauma," according to IMPD. Medics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"You don't leave a 12-year-old child in an alley. You don't leave your child in an alley," Morris said.

Monterious Crowe, 12, was found dead in the 500 block of North Elder Avenue on April 26, 2024.

Morris said the family wasn't informed about his death until Monday.

That's because Crowe didn't have any ID and was listed as a John Doe.

"I don't know who hit him. I don't know why they hit him. We don't know if he was running, but the way that his face was brutally swollen and his teeth was knocked out," Morris said.

Crowe's family told 13News they believe he may have been trying to run away from an attacker.

"You need to have some heart, and you need to come and face what you done," Morris said. "He was just a happy child. He loved to go play with his friends, basketball, just a typical 12-year-old child."

IMPD and Crowe's family are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

"He didn't even get to live half of his life, but for you to – whoever you are – to run him over and leave his body for dead in an alley ... you have to answer to God," Morris said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Det. Eric Snow at the IMPD Crash Investigations Office at 317-327-6549 or Eric.Snow@indy.gov.
