23-year-old man killed in crash south of Shelbyville

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Monday on State Road 9, north of State Road 252.

SHELBY COUNTY, Indiana — Police are investigating after a 23-year-old man was killed in a crash in Shelby County Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Jan. 29 in the 1000 block of State Road 9, north of State Road 252, roughly 10 miles south of Shelbyville. 

An alert from INDOT, citing the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, stated that one person had been killed. 

Witnesses told Shelby County sheriff's deputies that a Jeep Liberty, driven by 23-year-old Johnathon May, of Shelbyville, was going southbound on State Road 9 when it crossed the center line and crashed into a tractor-trailer hauling grain in the northbound lane.

Medics pronounced May dead at the scene.

The 65-year-old tractor-trailer driver and a 22-year-old passenger in the Jeep Liberty were both taken to hospitals. Their conditions are not known at this time.

All lanes of State Road 9 were closed between 1000 South and State Road 252 for several hours during the investigation.
