Police investigating deadly south Indianapolis shooting

IMPD said the shooting near Hanna Avenue and Rural Street happened around 7 p.m. Thursday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police said the victim of a shooting Thursday evening on Indianapolis' south side has died.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. in the 4100 block of Lake Park Boulevard, which is not far from East Hanna Avenue and South Rural Street.

An IMPD spokesperson said officers investigating a report of a shooting found a man with an apparent gunshot injury.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

On April 1, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 36-year-old David Scott Howes.

Officers detained a person of interest in the shooting at the scene. In an update late Thursday, IMPD said detectives believe that person was responsible for the shooting.

"After consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, detectives released that individual pending further investigation," an IMPD spokesperson said in a statement.

If you have information about the shooting, you're asked to contact IMPD Det. Dustin Keedy at 317-327-3475 or e-mail Dustin.Keedy@indy.gov. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
