IMPD: 18-year-old in custody in connection with Friday shooting at Castleton Square Mall

An 18-year-old man was shot and taken to the hospital, then released into police custody.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a shooting at Castleton Square Mall around 3 p.m. Friday.

Police said an 18-year-old male was wounded and mall personnel provided first aid until officers arrived. Police told 13News a tourniquet was used and they rushed him to the hospital and said the victim was in stable condition Friday afternoon.

Early Saturday morning, detectives arrested 18-year-old Curtis Wilson for his alleged role in the incident. An IMPD spokesperson said Wilson was shot in the mall, then treated at a hospital before he was taken to the Adult Detention Center Saturday on an allegation of criminal recklessness.

So far, he has not been officially charged nor assigned a court date.

Police are still trying to identify other people who may have been involved. Investigators are also trying to determine how many shots were fired.

Police initially said they believed the incident was isolated between two groups that had gotten into a dispute.

IMPD said mall security found a gun on the scene. Investigators spoke to witnesses that stayed in the area.

Workers and customers were told to shelter in place inside mall stores after the shooting. Police worked to clear areas throughout the mall and escort customers and staff out.

Latif Muhammad works at a mall kiosk and said, although he didn't hear the gunshots, he saw the reaction.

"Then some screams. Then people were leaving and closing shops," he said. "It's very tragic because it's a nice day and it was a happy mood at the mall. Someone interrupted it," said Muhammad.

Isaac Roque was in the middle of tattooing a client in his shop when the shooting started. He and his colleagues left out of a back door. He said actions like this hurt the mall's family-friendly environment.

"It definitely kind of sucks because the demographic of the mall is completely different. There's all different kinds of people. When people bring their problems here, it makes the mall look a lot worse than what it is," said Roque.

It was the second shooting at Castleton Square in as many months.

Roque said no matter where you are, it's always best to stay aware.

"Stay as safe as you can. Protect yourself as much as you can. Make sure you keep your eyes out. Stay cautious." Roque said.

While police closed the mall early, both Roque and Muhammad say they're not going to let Friday's events keep them from coming in Saturday.

Security will be increased at Castleton Square throughout the weekend.

Michael Mason, 16, was shot and killed outside Castleton Square Mall Tuesday night.

The victims' families said the shooting started when Mason mistakenly reached for a door handle of the wrong car in the parking lot.

A person inside the car opened fire.

A special prosecutor assigned to the case told 13News he is actively working with IMPD to complete the investigation and to determine if any criminal charges should be filed.
