Lawrence police identify suspect in deadly shooting of 16-year-old boy

The Marion County Coroner's Office said 16-year-old Andre Manuel Lara was shot and killed Tuesday night in a Lawrence neighborhood.

LAWRENCE, Ind. — Lawrence police say they've identified a suspect in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old boy Tuesday night.

The Marion County coroner said 16-year-old Andre Manuel Lara was shot and killed around 8:40 p.m. May 21 in the 4600 block of Birmingham Drive, near East 46th Street and North German Church Road.

Neighborhood surveillance videos viewed by 13News shows two people running down Birmingham Drive in the Winding Ridge Fairway East neighborhood.

Seconds earlier, you can hear gunshots.

"This is very scary thinking this was happening three doors down," said Courtney Miller, who lives in the neighborhood.

Miller didn't hear the shots, but she saw the police lights and crime scene tape afterwards.

Lawrence police said the shooting involved two groups of teens, three who were riding their bikes in the neighborhood and came upon another group of teens standing on the side of street, who started shooting.

Lara, who was hit, was one of the teens on a bike.

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from an argument going back to October.

"I just can't imagine his mom, what that family is going through and what they're having to deal with now," Miller said.

"It's sad because these youth are picking each other off like it's nothing now," said another neighbor, Tony Wise.

Wise said police returned hours later for a SWAT situation at a home down the street.

Lawrence police confirm it was part of the shooting investigation. Police did not provide additional information about the suspect.

A spokesperson for Lawrence Central High School confirmed Lara was a student, saying their hearts go out to Lara's family. The spokesperson said support services are available to students struggling with the loss.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Lawrence Police Department at 317-545-7575. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
