Man arrested in deadly January shooting on Indianapolis' near north side

INDIANAPOLIS — A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a deadly shooting on Indianapolis' near north side in January, IMPD announced.

The shooting was reported around 6 a.m. Jan. 18, 2024, in the 3300 block of North Kenwood Avenue, near North Illinois and West 34th streets.

Responding officers located a man with a gunshot wound, later identified as 44-year-old Alfred Wombles. He was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During an investigation, police identified and detained a 41-year-old man as a person of interest. The man was released pending further investigation after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

On May 13, 2024, the prosecutor's office charged the 41-year-old with reckless homicide, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The man turned himself in at the Marion County Community Justice Campus on May 21 and was arrested.

Online court records indicate the suspect has an initial court hearing in the case May 23.
