Indianapolis man charged in murders of 2 women found dead on Mitthoefer Road

Shannon Lassere was killed Jan. 27, and Marianne Weis was found Feb. 1. Their bodies were about 400 feet from each other.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Prosecutor's Office has filed formal charges against an Indianapolis man for his alleged role in the murders of two women after their bodies were found on Mitthoefer Road a little over 400 feet from each other.

Prosecutors charged 30-year-old David Hiner with two counts of murder.

"No one deserves what these two women experienced," IMPD Acting Chief Christopher Bailey said.

Shannon Lassere, 58, was found dead across the street from where she lived the morning of Jan. 27 in the 2200 block of North Mitthoefer Road.

Marianne Weis, 52, was found dead in the 2100 block of North Mitthoefer Road around 11 a.m. Feb. 1.

Both women were stabbed to death, according to the Marion County Coroner's Office.

The bodies of Shannon Lassere (left) and Marianne Weis (right) were found days apart, approximately 400 feet from each other on Mitthoefer Road.

Detectives collected surveillance video from businesses in the area, which helped them identify a person of interest who was seen with each of the women on the night they were killed.

IMPD said officers detained a person of interest, later identified as Hiner, on Feb. 6. According to IMPD, detectives were granted a search warrant the following day for an apartment in the 2200 block of Harbor Drive, near North Mitthoefer Road and East 21st Street, where Hiner had been staying.

Detectives said they found shoes in the suspect's bedroom that had blood on them, as well as other clothes that were either soaked in bleach or stained with blood.

Deputy Chief Kendale Adams said preliminary results from the blood on Hiner's shoes matched both victims.

Detectives learned Hiner was on probation out of La Porte County. Detectives then contacted La Porte County probation officers, who filed a probation violation, which led to a warrant to be issued for Hiner's arrest.

"While an arrest has been made, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done," Adams said.

"Today, we've taken the next step toward justice for Shannon and Marianne and those impacted by these horrific acts," Bailey said. "I want to express my gratitude to our community for their unwavering support and cooperation throughout this investigation. I also want to recognize the relentless efforts of the IMPD officers and detectives on this case, and our criminal justice partners. Their commitment, expertise, and tireless work have been instrumental in bringing closure to this case and ensuring the safety of our community."

A jury trial for Hiner is currently scheduled to begin April 29, 2024.
