Community concerned after recent east Indianapolis homicides

IMPD said they have not yet determined if two recent deaths are connected.

INDIANAPOLIS — A memorial is growing in the Indianapolis parking lot where Shannon Lassere's body was found.

Donna Spears has lived in her apartment on Mitthoefer Road for 40 years, developing a routine that fits her needs.

"I walk. I don't drive anywhere. I don't have any choice but to do that," Spears said.

Now, she's second-guessing her routine after two women's bodies were found within a week down the street from her building.

"It's scary, it's scary. It's sad," Spears said.

The first woman, 58-year-old Lassere, was found stabbed to death in the parking lot of a local business. Her daughter said she was on the way to a gas station and never came back.

Five days later, a second woman, 52-year-old Marianne Weis, was found dead with traumatic injuries. Her body was found near another nearby business — just 400 feet apart. Police said both women were killed similarly and either lived or were familiar with the area.

The bodies of Shannon Lassere (left) and Marianne Weis (right) were found days apart, approximately 400 feet from each other on Mitthoefer Road.

Police said they have not yet determined if these two deaths are connected, but that hasn't stopped neighbors from talking.

"The age kind of looks similar. It's just too coincidental," Spears said.

Spears said she won't be walking at night anymore. Neighbors are just hoping for an arrest soon.

"I don't know really what you can do if you're not right there when it happens — just warn the women don't walk by themselves," Spears said.

IMPD said they plan to step up patrols in the area. They're also asking neighbors and business owners in the area to review surveillance camera video and report any suspicious behavior.
