IMPD announces increased patrols after 2nd deadly shooting in 4 days at northwest side apartment complex

The latest shooting happened Sunday shortly before 2 a.m. in the 3900 block of Gable Lane Drive, near 38th Street and Knollton Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD announced a series of actions it will be taking after the second deadly shooting in four days at the same apartment complex on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

The department's northwest district said the following actions will take place in coming days after the shootings at The Residence at White River apartments:

  • An increase in directed patrols and additional patrols in the complex.
  • An assessment on the potential for additional technology.
  • A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design assessment from the Community Resource Unit.
  • A neighborhood crime watch meeting that will include officers and Crime Stoppers.

IMPD Northwest District said it has been in touch with complex management, which has been "extremely cooperative."

Feb. 25 shooting

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, officers responded to a report of a person shot at The Residence at White River apartments in the 3800 block of Gable Lane Drive, near 38th Street and Knollton Road.

Officers arrived and found a man, who had been shot, in the parking lot near a vehicle. Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

On Feb. 26, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 26-year-old Darien Montez Pope.

Police have not shared information at this time about a possible suspect or motive.

Anyone with information on Sunday morning's incident is asked to call Detective Douglas Swails at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Douglas.Swails@indy.gov.

Mark Manda, a resident of the complex, was shocked to see the scene upon his return.

"Man, I'm shaken right now," said Manda. "Honestly, I am here on contract, at this point I don't even need to be here."

"I don't know what's going to happen to the rest of the neighborhood," Manda said.

Feb. 21 shooting

The first shooting in the past week at the apartment complex happened shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Officers arrived to the 3900 block of Gable Lane Circle and found a man just outside the driver's side door of a car with a gunshot wound. Medics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

On Feb. 22, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the man as 37-year-old Bryan Ramon Williams.

IMPD said officers detained one male at the scene but hadn't determined what role, if any, they had in the shooting. Thursday morning, the department said the male had been released, pending further investigation after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

"I heard some noises. Now, I think they were gunshots. I've neve heard gunshots, so I don't know, and then I come down to this," recalled Brianna Hicks, a resident at the complex.

Police said a preliminary investigation leads them to believe Wednesday's incident began somewhere else in the apartment complex. The victim then allegedly drove off in a car and crashed into a van before coming to a stop.

"I mean, it makes me feel a little uneasy because obviously this is supposed to be a gated community," said Codi Laughner, a resident at the complex.

"At this point, there is no indication these incidents are related, but detectives will investigate if there is a connection," IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said in a news release.

Anyone with information on Wednesday's incident is asked to contact Detective Lottie Patrick at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Lottie.Patrick@indy.gov.

Calls can also be made anonymously for either incident to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
