1 killed, 5 wounded in shooting in Broad Ripple bar; 25-year-old arrested

The shooting happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. at Landsharks in the 800 block of Broad Ripple Avenue, IMPD confirmed.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating a shooting that killed one man and wounded five more people at a Broad Ripple bar early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. March 16 at Landsharks at 808 Broad Ripple Ave., IMPD confirmed.

Officers working along Broad Ripple Avenue in front of the bar heard shots coming from inside the business, according to IMPD. Five men who had been shot were found on the scene and taken to local hospitals. Another victim drove to an Indianapolis hospital, bringing the total number of people shot to six.

One of the victims, later identified as 36-year-old Tim Brown, died from his injuries, and police believe all the other victims are in stable condition.

Tim Brown was fatally shot at Landsharks in Broad Ripple around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024.

"Violence in our community is absolutely unacceptable," IMPD North District Commander Matthew Thomas said.

According to court documents, detectives learned two women started arguing in the bar prior to shots being fired.

Court documents say detectives reviewed surveillance footage from inside the bar and city cameras, which allegedly showed the suspect firing shots and run from the scene with a woman. Surveillance video then showed the suspect drive away in the same car he arrived in.

IMPD said they had taken a 25-year-old man into custody around 10 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Murphys Landing Drive, near Bluff and West Southport roads on the city's south side. He was later arrested by homicide detectives for murder.

(NOTE: 13News has a policy not to name suspects until formal charges are filed by a prosecutor.)

Court documents say detectives obtained search warrants for the suspect vehicle, apartment complex and bags the suspect and woman were carrying. Detectives said they found the clothes the suspect was wearing, as well as a gun underneath the driver's seat of the car that had the same caliber as the shell casings found at the bar.

Police ask anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact IMPD Det. Steven Gray at 317-327-3475 or by email at Steven.Gray@indy.gov. Tips can also be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.

The Broad Ripple Village Association shared this message on the shooting:

"Our Broad Ripple community experienced a shooting early this morning inside Landsharks, killing one victim and leaving five others injured. We are saddened by the events that took place inside Landsharks. It is reprehensible that a life was lost, and that several individuals were injured emotionally and physically. While the BRVA does not have the authority to regulate establishments, we are committed to continue working with business owners in the Village to help support a safe environment for our residents and visitors and will do everything within our power to advocate for those responsible to be held accountable. Security measures and operating procedures that keep staff and patrons safe are critical. The majority of the bars in the Village are committed to and have put recommended safety procedures in place. We stand ready to continue working with the mayor, prosecutor, IMPD, and both city and state legislators to take a stand against violence and implement effective solutions to create a safe and peaceful environment for our residents, visitors, and businesses."
