Check Up 13: Free prostate screening

Doctors say 20 percent of patients who have prostate cancer have normal blood tests, and the only way the cancer is detected is with an exam.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Men 40 and over have the chance to receive a free prostate screening.

The emphasis this month for Check Up 13 is prostate cancer, which is detected with a blood test and physical exam.

Many times, men with prostate cancer will die of old age or something other than prostate cancer; however,Randy Danko's cancer was different.

It's frustrating to him that though he stays active through biking, his cancer was a real threat.

"It was something that had to be taken out. I really had no choice," Danko said. "If I wanted to have a chance to live, I had to get all those Gleason 4 cancer cells out, and the best chance was to either radiate the hell out of the prostate or cut the thing out."

Danko opted for robotic surgery, and doctors now say his prognosis is promising.

The key is knowing your status, and you can do that with an annual screening.

Fortunately, it's easy with Check Up 13 today.

You may go to one of the St. Vincent locations in Greenwood, Indianapolis or Noblesville for a free blood test and physical exam if you are 40 or older and haven't had a screening in the last 12 months.

To register, call the hotline (1-866-824-3251) after it opens at 8:00 a.m. this morning. You can also register online here.
