Queen of Free: Saving on summer fun

There are plenty of great summer fun activities for kids that are affordable and even free.

INDIANAPOLIS — Prices are so high right now that it’s difficult to afford regular trips to the movie theater, and theme parks are likely out of the question for many.

But Cherie Lowe, the Queen of Free, said on 13Sunrise that there are plenty of great summer fun activities for kids that are affordable and even free.

Movies and concerts

There are free concerts in local amphitheaters and malls. Check your city’s website. Cherie mentioned Concerts on the Canal as an example.

You don't have to pay full rates for summer blockbusters to enjoy a movie, either. Regal Cinemas is offering a Summer Movie Express with $2 tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to see popular family films from years past.

Free museum admission

Check with the Indiana History Center, Newfields and the Children's Museum for their free admission days each month.

Cherie also suggested staying home and making your own ice cream. All you need is a gallon plastic zippered storage bag and a smaller bag, along with ice, salt, cream, sugar and your favorite flavorings. The directions are in her blog.
