INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The Internal Revenue Service is sending out another warning about a scam that's already hit central Indiana.
They say cyber crooks are posing as company executives and asking for employee tax information.
That's exactly what happened to Scotty's Brewhouse. The scammers tricked the company's payroll manager into sending the W-2 data for all 4,000 of its employees.
But they're not alone. Other companies have also been hit by this same scheme.
Cybersecurity experts say the criminals will use the stolen information to file false tax returns. To fight fraud, they encourage companies to issue W-2s as soon as possible and say employees should file their taxes early, before a scammer can.
