'Drag Race' stars Priyanka, Latrice Royale discuss politically driven season of 'We're Here'

New episodes of the reality TV series air Fridays on HBO and stream on Max.

INDIANAPOLIS — Emmy-, GLAAD- and Peabody Award-winning "We're Here" is back for a fourth season, and the message is stronger than ever.

The reality TV series follows drag queens as they spread love through the art of drag across small-town America.

The first three seasons featured "RuPaul's Drag Race" stars Bob the Drag Queen, Shangela and Eureka traveling to a different town each episode to put on one-night-only drag shows.

The fourth season, however, consists of six episodes – three in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and three in Tulsa, Oklahoma – where the following drag queens explore recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and its effect on the community:

  • Jaida Essence Hall: winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 12 and competitor on "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: All Winners"
  • Priyanka: winner of "Canada's Drag Race" Season 1
  • Latrice Royale: competitor on "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 4 and "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" Seasons 1 and 4
  • Sasha Velour: winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 9

In the first three episodes, Jaida Essence Hall, Priyanka and Sasha Velour travel to Murfreesboro after the city canceled Pride following a statewide anti-drag ban in Tennessee.

"We bring some joy, and we tell some stories, and we make you cry, we make you laugh, and we educate you on what's going on around the world these days," Priyanka said. "The longer you spend in a space, the more truth comes to light. There's so many communities – even in Canada, even in Indianapolis – where there's a lot of hate."

In the final three episodes, Latrice Royale joins Priyanka and Sasha Velour in Oklahoma, a state that has introduced an alarming number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills.

"This is what I've been doing, so it felt like an extension of what I've been doing on a much broader scale and level, but the mission and the work is still the same," Latrice Royale said. "We're just showing up in our uniforms and doing our jobs."

The queens connect with members of the community who they adopt as their drag daughters as they prepare to put on epic drag shows.

"I want people to learn patience, slow it down, stop being so angry, have conversations and stop judging people," Priyanka said.

"Please educate yourself. You can see how ignorance is running rampant, but you have to realize ignorance is a choice," Latrice Royale said.

The fourth season of "We're Here" premieres Friday, April 26 at 9 p.m. on HBO and streaming on Max.
