Avon PD: Suspected impaired driver killed in 3-vehicle crash

The crash happened around 5 p.m. Thursday on the Dan Jones Bridge, just south of U.S. Highway 36.

AVON, Ind. — Avon police are investigating after one person died in a three-vehicle crash Thursday evening.

The crash happened near the Dan Jones Bridge, just south of U.S. Highway 36, around 5 p.m. April 18.

Crash investigators believe one of the vehicles involved in the crash was going northbound on Dan Jones Road, and the two other vehicles were going southbound on Dan Jones Road just before the crash.

Witnesses told police the vehicle going northbound was driving erratically and passing other vehicles on the right, both on and off the roadway.

According to witnesses, the northbound vehicle overcorrected when returning to the roadway and crossed into the oncoming southbound lane, hitting one of the southbound vehicles. That crash then caused another southbound vehicle to hit the back of the vehicle in front of it.

At 5:10 pm today we were called out to a working entrapment. Our crews worked as a team to successfully extricate 3 individuals. All patients were alert and were transported to a nearby hospital. Great work!

Medics took the driver of the northbound vehicle to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Around 6:15 p.m., hospital staff pronounced the driver dead.

Police said medics also took the driver of the first southbound vehicle to Eskenazi Hospital with serious injuries. That driver has received treatment for those injuries and is expected to recover, according to police.

An infant was also in the first southbound vehicle, but the infant was not injured. Medics took the infant to Riley Hospital for Children out of precaution, and the infant was thoroughly examined and released to another family member.

Police said the driver of the third vehicle was not injured and released at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators believe the northbound driver, who died in the crash, was impaired, which possibly contributed to the crash.

Investigators are working with the Hendricks County Coroner's Office for toxicology testing for confirmation.
