Race fans react to rain delay ahead of Indy 500

Just before opening ceremonies Sunday morning, IMS announced a delay in the start of the race and asked fans to leave the stands as rain moved in.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — As race fans head into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for race day, there's one thing on their minds.

"The storms are coming in," one fan said.

But right before the opening ceremony, IMS delayed the start of the race and asked fans to leave the stands as rain approached central Indiana.

"It's my first race and I'm pretty mad because I was trying to stay in there and see what was going to happen with the rain and stuff," said Noah Bina.

At 11:15 a.m. Sunday, IMS officials made the decision to delay the race to give fans plenty of time to get to a safe place as storms rolled in.

13News caught up with fans walking to the track as soon as the decision was made.

"We are disappointed, but we understand the need for safety here at the track," David Lund said.

Before fans exited the stands, they told 13News they were going to find unique ways to pass the time.

"I am probably going to sit in the car and go to sleep for a little bit," Bina said.

Whether fans are in the grandstands or waiting outside, they say they are still glad to be in the Racing Capital of the World.

"We are with friends, and we are just going to make a party of it," another fan said. "Fun is the attitude of the heart, make your fun where you are at."
