Purdue transfer Mason Gillis heading to Duke

Gillis announced the news on social media Monday, posting "Next chapter" on his Instagram, next to a photo of him in a Duke jersey.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University transfer Mason Gillis is committing to Duke.

Gillis announced the news on social media Monday, posting "Next chapter" on his Instagram, next to a photo of him in a Duke jersey.

The New Castle, Indiana native earned Big Ten "Sixth Man of the Year" honors after a huge year off the bench for the Boilermakers. He averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds as Purdue won the conference title outright and reached the national championship game, where they lost to UConn.

Gillis played in 132 games in four years at Purdue, averaging 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in his Boilermaker career.

He announced his intent to enter the transfer portal in an Instagram post April 15, thanking his Purdue teammates and staff for his time in West Lafayette.

"Our ultimate goal was to make an impact on the program and the university. I feel that with the special teams I was on, we achieved the ultimate goal," Gillis wrote. "I would not be the person I am today without the privilege to attend and represent Purdue University."

Gillis led New Castle to a regional title his junior year, earning Indiana Junior All-Star honors before an injury caused him to miss his senior season.

He earned his degree from Purdue in 3 1/2 years before enrolling in grad school to pursue an MBA in management.
