Kentucky Derby 150 | Record-breaking number of bets placed

More than $320 million was bet at Churchill Downs on Derby Day alone.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It was a record-breaking day for placing bets at the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby

Accoridng to Churchill Downs, wagering from all sources on Derby Day set a new record of $320.5 million, beating last year’s record of $288.7 million. The Derby itself had $210.7 million bet on the race, with $10 million of that coming from Japan. 

For the whole week, $446 million was bet on races, beating last year's record of $412 million. 

Churchill Downs said TwinSpires, the official betting partner of the Derby, handled a new record of $92.1 million in wagering on Churchill Downs races on Derby Day compared to last year’s record of $75.5, including all settled future wagers and affiliate wagering. 

TwinSpires’ handle on the Kentucky Derby race was a new record of $60.9 million, beating last year’s record of $48.9 million, including all settled future wagers and affiliate wagering. 

The long-awaited 150th running of the Kentucky Derby ended with Mystik Dan crossing the finish line at Churchill Downs in a photo finish.

Sierra Leone finished second and Forever Young finished third.

Mystik Dan and his team will take home $3.1 million. This year's purse increased $2 million to a record $5 million.

There were 156,710 people who attended the Derby this year.
