INDIANAPOLIS — The Bishop Chatard Trojans won their second IHSAA football Class 5A state championship in a 35-7 rout of the Heritage Hills Patriots on Friday.
Bishop Chatard finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record while Heritage Hills lost their second game of the season to finish with a 13-2 mark.
Chatard senior running back Riley Kinnett scored first for the Trojans on a 24-yard touchdown run.
Kinnett had an outstanding game, scoring all but one of the Trojans' touchdowns and tying a 3A state championship single-game record with four total rushing touchdowns.
In total, Kinnett rushed 25 times for 158 total yards in addition to the four total touchdowns.
Chatard's fifth and final score came with around eleven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Aidan Arteaga found Jack Weybright for a 10-yard touchdown pass.
The Patriots offense struggled throughout the game, failing to reach the end zone until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jett Goldsberry found Tyler Ruxer for a 16-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left to play in the game, preventing the shutout.
The win marked Chatard's second consecutive Class 3A football championship and their first undefeated season since 2002.
For Heritage Hills, running back Braydon Durham had 71 rushing yards off 15 attempts while Goldsberry completed 8 out of 15 of his passes for 106 yards and one touchdown. However, the Trojans defense sacked Goldsberry three times, continuously making it difficult for the Patriots to find the end zone.
Senior defensive back Colin Guy racked up three interceptions to tie a single-game record in the state championship game, which was set by Zionsville's Wes Kendall in 1996.
