Indiana basketball unveils jersey patch in memory of Coach Bob Knight

The round patch features three stars, marking the trio of national championships coached by Knight at IU.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University unveiled the tribute they'll wear in memory of Coach Bob Knight this season.

The men's basketball team posted photos of their jerseys on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing a round patch with the initials "RMK" — for Robert Montgomery Knight — with three stars, signifying the three national championships the Hoosiers won under the legendary coach.

Knight died Nov. 1 at the age of 83.

He led the Hoosiers for 29 years, from 1972 to 2000, racking up 662 wins at IU, en route to 11 Big Ten regular season championships and five Final Fours, including national titles in 1976, 1981 and 1987.

Knight also led the United States to the gold medal in men's basketball at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Indiana hosts Marian University for an exhibition game Friday night, the first game since Knight's passing. The Hoosiers open the regular season Tuesday,  Nov. 7 against Florida Gulf Coast in Bloomington.

The IU women's team will also wear patches in memory of Knight. Head coach Teri Moren said earlier this week that Knight's Hoosiers were a big part of her childhood.

"My earliest memories of him are growing up in southern Indiana, that's all I knew, you know, was Indiana basketball and Coach Bobby Knight," she told 13Sports director Dave Calabro Wednesday night.

The women's team opens the regular season at home on Thursday, Nov. 9 against Eastern Illinois. The Hoosiers open the season ranked ninth in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
