Indianapolis - The rising cost of healthcare is a big concern for many Hoosiers, but a new program could now help people save hundreds of dollars on prescription medication.

Wal-Mart is planning to make an announcement Thursday that it will start selling some generic drugs for just $4.

Since October 5, the program has already tested successfully in the Tampa, Florida area. Now just two weeks later, Wal-Mart is expanding it into Indiana and 13 other states.

Wal-Mart has scheduled Indiana news conferences in Evansville, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. More details will be released then, but we do know from the Florida program that the plan there covers a month's supply of 143 different drugs.

The big department store says it launched the program in an effort to save working Americans money on health care.

Critics say it's a stunt to draw in business and a grab for a bigger share of the drug business, but at a $4 price the program could have a ripple effect at other pharmacies that could end up helping consumers.

Target said it would match Wal-Mart's prescription prices in Florida. It's not clear what it will do now. So far, Walgreens and CVS are not making changes.

Common drugs on the discounted list are amoxicillin, prescription Ibuprofen, Prednisone, and Tetracycline. See the rest of the list. (This is a PDF. You need Adobe Reader to look at it.)

Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more details as the announcement comes down at 11:00 a.m. at Wal-Mart on 86th and Michigan.
