World's heaviest man recovering from bariatric surgery

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (WTHR) - The man believed to be the world's heaviest is recovering from bypass surgery in Mexico.

Juan Pedro Franco has weighed up to 1,311 pounds and doctors feared for his life. According to local media, Franco has been largely bed-ridded for the last seven years due to his size. He was recently put on a diet to help shed 385 pounds to make the surgery possible.

In an interview after the surgery Tuesday, Franco said he would do his best to make his bypass surgery a success.

The 33-year-old said he has battled obesity all of his life, but things got worse after an injury when he was 17.

Franco's medical team said they are waiting to see how much of a loss in weight his body will make from the surgery, but due to his delicate health, they are keeping a close eye on him.

Franco underwent biliopancreatic diversion surgery, a type of bariatric surgery used to make the stomach smaller in severely obese patients.
