Rochester - A company has won preliminary zoning approval at one of two northern Indiana sites it is considering for a new ethanol plant even though nearby residents continue to fight the plan.
Fulton County Commissioners approved rezoning 430 acres of farmland for the $150 million plant proposed by Indiana Renewable Fuels LLC.
The commissioners set conditions on odor and road rights-of-way and required a groundwater assessment be completed. Those conditions must still be considered by the county's Plan Commission.
Some of those living around the site about 35 miles south of South Bend raised worries about possible pollution, noise and drainage problems.
The company also is considering a site about three miles to the north in Marshall County for the plant.
