ILLINOIS (WTHR) — LGBTQ history will be a part of the curriculum in Illinois schools starting this year.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed HB 246 into law in August.

The law requires that "in public schools only, the teaching of history of the United States shall include a study of the roles and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the history of this country and this State."

The bill is effective beginning July 1, 2020.

Illinois joins California, New Jersey, and Colorado in adding LGBTQ history to its curriculum.
