Freshman Emmitt Holt reportedly dropped off sophomore Devin Davis in the Memorial Stadium parking lot just before 1:00 Saturday morning. Witnesses who were still in the Jeep told police Holt pulled out onto 17th Street and was heading west when Davis stepped into the street and was hit by the passenger side of Holt's Jeep.
Davis' family released a statement Sunday night, saying:
"As all parents can understand, the last 40+ hours have been difficult for us and for all of those who care about our son. Devin's condition is improving and we know that there is a road to recovery ahead.
"We want to thank the incredible team at IU Health Bloomington Hospital for taking such great care of Devin. We also want to express our gratitude to Coach Crean, who has been by Devin's bedside for most of the past two days and to all of his coaches, teammates and the extended Hoosier family who have kept him in their prayers."
"On behalf of the Davis Family and the IU men's basketball program, we appreciate the concern, calls, texts, and thoughts and prayers we have received. We are especially grateful for every doctor, nurse, and staff member at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. We look forward to his continued recovery."
Davis was taken to the hospital unconscious with a serious head injury. Holt had a blood alcohol level of 0.025, according to police. They cited him for illegal consumption and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 0.02.
"I feel bad for Devin Davis and all the players and the whole Indiana family. It's sad. I hope he recovers and he's doing well," said IU alum Andrew Magner who said he came to campus Saturday to watch the basketball team play in a scrimmage. "We were told there was an injury, so, obviously no scrimmage today."
"Obviously alcohol's a huge part of being in college, so it is going to happen, but if you're playing a D-1 sport, you should have no part in alcohol or even drinking for that matter," said Taylor Patterson.
For IU fans, it's certainly not the start to pre-season they expected, one of their basketball players seriously injured and another player involved.
IU Coach Tom Crean issued a statement Saturday afternoon saying, "First and foremost, our thoughts are with Devin and his family and we pray that his condition improves in the coming days....An injury to one of us is an injury to all of us and we are devastated by the news. We will continue to support Devin and Emmit in every possible way and I know the Hoosier family will come together to rally for these young men. We are working to gather additional information on the accident."
IU's basketball team is scheduled to play an exhibition game Thursday in Bloomington against Northwood University.
