POSEYVILLE (WTHR) - Daylight revealed some major damage left behind by severe storms that tore across Indiana late Tuesday night.

Heavy rain, hail and strong winds left their mark. Police spent the morning responding to downed trees blocking roadways and vehicles in ditches.

The National Weather Service believes an EF-3 tornado touched down, packing winds of 135 miles per hour. Most of the damage is concentrated in Posey and Gibson Counties, especially in Fort Branch, Griffin and Poseyville.

Everything is pretty quiet along the Black River in Posey County, but as you look around you can see the cracked tree limbs like toothpicks. And it's not just the small ones. Big ones are cracked too.

Fortunately, everyone was okay in Posey County, but literally it was just a matter of minutes.

"My husband was watching the weather and yelled to get downstairs. Just as he said that we got downstairs and put the young one in the bathtub and we surrounded him and we heard the crash and we all hit the floor" Amber Bemire remembered.

Her brother Travis lives just up the street.

"I yelled at my boy, 'Come on! We are going to get out of here.' Cut back to New Harmony and get out of the way. By the time he got up, it was too late. He laid down by the bed and I laid on top of him. It was over in five seconds," Travis Clark recollected.

"We could see it through the rafters, 'cause there was a tree through there and the wind picked up the couch and coffee table and pulled the rug out from under it and put them back down on the floor. Just lifted everything up and set it back down," Amber continued.

"You drop a log on us, we are just going to cut firewood and that is the only way we can look at it. Everyone is safe, that is all that matters. We will cut that log off there and rebuild," David Buhmeier added.

They can move on and see what is waiting for them down the road.

The National Weather Service was also surveying EF-2 damage near the town of Ireland in Dubois County and confirmed an EF-2 tornado that touched down near Mitchell in Lawrence County.
