Suspect in custody after ambulance carjacking

A suspect is in custody following an ambulance carjacking in downtown Indianapolis early Thursday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A suspect is in police custody after carjacking an ambulance early Thursday morning.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. when a crash happened on eastbound Interstate 70 at Harding Street. A suspect pulled out a gun and kidnapped the victim of the crash, then drove off in the victim's car. The suspect crashed the victim's car a second time on I-65 near West Street.

After the second crash, the suspect flagged down an ambulance and the paramedics stopped to assist him. Then, the suspect got in the ambulance — still armed with a gun — and took off.

Police caught the suspect a short time later on southbound I-65 at Illinois Street downtown. Those officers had stopped to help what they believed were medics who needed assistance.

The medics were not injured during the incident. Police say the victim of the original carjacking was also unharmed.

IMPD Officer Aaron Hamer said police are still speaking with the initial carjacking victim and said the entire incident is "very confusing." He compared the situation to a movie scene.
