Just nine months ago, Alexander Muse and Rylan Barnes launched Shop Savvy, an application for smartphones.

"If you want to be more informed about the decisions you make when you're shopping, Shop Savvy could be a great application for you," Muse said.

Here's how it works: You use the camera on your phone to scan the barcode of whatever you're thinking about buying. Shop Savvy finds the best prices on that item, and then sends that information back to your phone so you know if you're getting a good deal. After scanning a book, Shop Savvy reveals it's available online for $4 and in local stores for $15.

"It finds the best prices on the internet and at nearby stores," Barnes said.

The newest version of Shop Savvy is faster and more accurate than the original, and it can even tell people which stores have which items. And if you need directions, that's no problem either.

The application is free, which may be one reason why it's catching on so fast.

"Now we have millions of users, 20,000 retailers, 20 million products in the system," Muse said.
