Mishawaka, IN (AP) - A northern Indiana schools superintendent who kept his marriage to another district administrator a secret for nearly five years has decided to retire.

Mishawaka schools officials say Steven Mills sent a letter to board members Monday asking them to accept his retirement effective immediately.

District attorney Ed Sullivan says Mills feels that the controversy surrounding his marriage prevents him from being an effective leader.

Mills has been the district's superintendent since 1999. The School Board put him on administrative leave last week after he disclosed that he'd been married to literacy programs director Joann Shaw since 2005.

The Associated Press couldn't locate him for comment because he doesn't have a listed telephone number.
