Outgoing Indianapolis art museum CEO led expansion

Maxwell Anderson has led the Indianapolis museum since 2006, during which time it opened a 100-acre outdoor sculpture and nature park and bounced back from big losses to its endowment.

INDIANAPOLIS - Leaders of the Indianapolis Museum of Art are planning a national search to replace its CEO who is leaving to become director at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Maxwell Anderson has led the Indianapolis museum since 2006, during which time it opened a 100-acre outdoor sculpture and nature park and bounced back from big losses to its endowment. The Dallas museum announced Thursday he would take it over in January.

Anderson tells The Indianapolis Star that he decided to make the move because of Dallas' unique cultural scene and because his wife grew up in Texas.

Indianapolis art museum board chairman Stephen Russell says while the museum will miss Anderson's leadership, it expects to turn the leadership change into an asset.
