Locally-owned Franklin restaurant gives $53K in tips to charity

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WTHR) – A Franklin restaurant being tipped for its good service and yummy pastries is putting all of that money right back into the community.

The business has received more than $53,000 in tips since they opened in September of last year.

The "Main and Madison Market Cafe" in downtown Franklin doesn't have a wait staff and wasn't going to collect tips until people asked to leave them.

“When we opened, we were not going to have a tipping option, but many customers asked us if they could leave one. That was when we decided to donate all tips to deserving non-profits in our community – as a way to give back for all they good each does,” co-owner, Stephanie Northern explains.

Fourteen non-profit organizations have received money so far, with most receiving over $4,000.

"You see where the money is going and you are inclined to show your appreciation for the staff as well as to help out with the charities," customer Cindy Prather said.

They non-profit organizations include:

  • Franklin Heritage Girls Inc.
  • Franklin Boys & Girls Club
  • Johnson County Senior Services
  • Johnson County Humane Society
  • Kic-It
  • The Franklin Schools’ PTO’s
  • Interchurch Food Pantry
  • Beats for Bristol
  • The Dolly Parton Imagination Library
  • Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build
  • Center for Global Impact
  • Aspire Johnson County
  • Johnson County Banquets

The tips for December will all be donated to Dressember.

“It’s absolutely heart-warming to know that we can be a vehicle for such wonderful things in our community. We are so proud each month to present the check to the non-profit that has been chosen” said Ashley Schultz, co-owner.
