Hagerstown - A landmark restaurant in eastern Indiana open for more than 60 years has shut down less than a year after a new owner was expected to stave off its closure.

A sign on the door of Welliver's Smorgasbord in Hagerstown says it is closed until further notice. Its telephone message says the Welliver family apologizes for the short notice and thanked customers for their loyalty.

Abbott's Candy Shop owner Suanna Abbott Goonight says she's sad at the fixture's loss and that the closing will likely hurt most other nearby businesses.

The owners have faced a tax debt of more than $200,000. The Welliver family announced plans to close last summer before a Fishers businessman agreed to buy the restaurant in a sale that was never completed.
