'Massive potholes' on west Indianapolis street could be filled by Friday

One neighbor told 13News in February she had been messaging anyone she thought could help.

INDIANAPOLIS — The sound of construction may annoy some people, but it comes as sweet relief for those who have been living with huge potholes on Chelsea Road on the west side of Indianapolis.

13News first brought you the story of the "massive craters" taking up parts of the street in February.

After reaching out to the Department of Public Works, a city-county councilor, and speaking with those living on the street, updates are coming that neighbors say the road desperately needs.

"Paving my road, getting my road fixed, yeah!" Christy Hayes said. "It's about time. It's a great feeling. I'm pumped up. I'm just like watching these guys doing it. I'm just like, 'Yes. It's finally coming,' I love it."

Back in February, Hayes told 13News she had been sending emails to anyone who she thought could help.

"There's a brand new road that way, brand new road that way, brand new road that way. What's wrong with our road?" Hayes asked.

Hayes has lived on Chelsea Road, near West Washington Street and South Lynhurst Drive, most of her life. She said the massive potholes that she drives over every day haven't always been there.

"They came out and surfaced it in like 1996 when I was graduating high school at Ben Davis," Hayes said.

Homeowners say the potholes weren't just causing damage to their car, but also ruining people's property. They say people would drive through their yards to avoid hitting the holes.

Hayes said she can't wait to drive on her new road and hopes to see the road paved on Friday, May 10 — an estimate the city said was weather-permitting.
