INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis City-County Councilor La Keisha Jackson was just chosen to fill a vacant seat in the Indiana Senate.
Sen. Jean Breaux died in March, just two days after announcing she was stepping down from her position due to health concerns. She represented the east side of Indianapolis.
Jackson will now serve the remainder of Breaux's term, which ends in January.
Jackson will be sworn in once paperwork from Thursday's caucus is accepted by Senate leadership.
Jackson said crime, food disparities, transportation gaps and economic development are some of the biggest issues facing Hoosiers.
"It's going to be a learning curve," Jackson said. "I'm ready for the challenge. I'm ready to listen and talk to people and get out in the community. Going to some town halls, some meet-and-greets, and that's what I want to do to get to know my constituents in areas that I have not met yet."
Breaux's name will stay on the ballot for the primary, which is now less than three weeks away. A second caucus to fill the vacancy on the November ballot will happen between the primary and July 3.
As for Jackson's council seat, a yet-to-be-scheduled caucus in Marion County will name her replacement.
